When filming any kind of piece whether it’s a commercial, music video, or movie, it’s important to find the perfect locations. Choosing the wrong location or not being familiar with what the location has to offer can make or break a shoot. Here are some tips for finding the best location for your project.
1. Take a Digital Look
With all the technology the modern world has to offer, sometimes it’s possible to scout a location right from home. By way of Locations Hub and Shot Hotspot, it’s easier than ever to see the perks and landscape of a location from you home computer.
2. Tour and Snap
Once you’ve narrowed your choices down, take a visit. It may be costly to send a production member just to scan a space, but it’s better safe than sorry. There’s nothing worse than arriving on set without properly surveying the site and realizing it won’t work for the project. While at the location, take pictures. Be sure to take pictures from a variety of angles, a viewfinder is a great way to get an idea of what the space will look like once the camera is there.
3. There Are No Stupid Questions
Other production members who weren’t there will also need to know the in’s and out’s of the location, so make sure to gather everyone’s questions before scouting the site. Make sure you ask everyone who may be involved with shooting. Lastly, there are no stupid questions, “is the neighborhood safe?” and “are their bathrooms?” are important too!
